A Wee Story From Govan * *
It had just gone half past three in the morning and someone was at the front door.
* *
The dog was going bananas and I could hear the rain battering against the windows.
Pulling on a pair of trousers I made my way downstairs and opened the door.
There was a guy standing under what looked like a mini waterfall - he was soaked to the skin.
"I'm really sorry to get you up at such an hour, Jimmy, but do you think you could give me a push?"
"Don't you know what time it is? It's half
past three! - some people are trying to sleep." and I shut the door, not too gently.
Back upstairs, she who must be obeyed was less than pleased.
"Remember the night we broke down in the pouring rain, with the kids in the back, and you knocked on that man's door? What if he'd told US to get lost?"
"But this guy sounds like he might be half cut" I protested.
"How do you know? He may have an impediment. Anyway, it sounds like he needs some help."
I pulled on a coat and a pair of trainers and headed back downstairs.
Outside, the rain formed a curtain.
"Hey" I shouted through the din, "Do you still want a push?"
"Yes, please" came the reply.
"Where are you?" I shouted. And the well-oiled voice replied;
"I'm over here, on your garden swing!"
