The completion of the new £75million high-tech Science Centre with the addition of the breathtaking Millenium Science Tower is set to become one of the greatest achievements of the new millennium for Hamilton-based Parkburn Controls Ltd.
The Science Centre, located at Pacific Quay on the site of the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival, is an Exploratorium and Planetarium. The key feature is a magnificent wind-powered, rotating 100-metre tall Millennium Tower.
The tower is Glasgow's newest landmark standing at twice the size of the nearby Finnieston Crane. It will feature a viewing cabin offering soaring 20-mile views of the city.
It is due to be completed by the summer and is expected to attract around 600,000 visitors.
The concept was designed by architect Richard Horden and uses control panel systems designed and manufactured by Parkburn Controls Ltd.
The behind-the-scenes science involved in controlling the tower is fascinating. Parkburn Controls managing director, Peter Marshall said; "We are renowned for working on specialised projects throughout the world in varied industries and are particularly pleased to have such a challenging project on our doorstep.
Caley Ocean Systems have entrusted us with the manufacture of the drives and control equipment, provision of weather stations, operator and computer station for the tower and software."

The site is set to become the largest media centre outside London, with the BBC, Channel Four, Scottish Screen and Scot FM Radio all considering a move into the new £80m Science Park.
The IMAX CINEMA at number 50 Pacific Quay opens daily from Saturday 14th October 2000 with showing times varying.
Admission is OK at £5 with £3.50 concs.

The Scottish Criminal Records Office has finally confirmed it is to open at Pacific Quay. The deal has been done to re-locate on the former Garden Festival site from its current premises at Strathclyde Police Headquarters at Pitt Street in the city.
The 30,000 sq.ft. offices rented from Pacific Quay developments Ltd will provide a new high security home for Scotland's role of shame - 700,000 criminal records, 350,000 sets of fingerprints as well as mugshots.
The unit currently has a dozen staff handling 120,000 enquiries from employers every year.
As a result staff expect the workload to increase sevenfold but there is no room to expand in the current premises. An extra 70 staff are expected to be taken on and a new computer system introduced.
The change in the law is designed to make it possibe to check the records of anyone applying to work in the voluntary sector including Scout, Brownie or youth leaders.
The aim is to prevent sex perverts getting access to children and allow charities to vet possible treasurers to ensure they have no convictions for embezzlement.
Criminals will also be able to apply for details of live previous convictions.
