The original WAVERLEY, built in 1899, was sunk off Dunkirk on May 29 , 1940 along with most of its crew and the servicemen it had rescued from the beaches.
The current boat was built in 1947 at the Inglis shipyards in Glasgow for LNER (London and North Eastern Railways) and was intended for cruising on the Clyde. She was eventually taken over by Caledonian MacBrayne before being sold to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society for £1 in 1974.
