A swing bridge built for the Scottish Development Agency to cater for pedestrian traffic during the Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988, it runs from the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre on the north bank near Finnieston Street to Pacific Quay near Lorne Street on the south.
It is the furthest down river of any crossing with the exception of the Erskine Bridge, but where the Erskine Bridge was built high above the level of the water to allow shipping to pass easily underneath, this was not practicable with the footbridge.
Although few ships today come up as far as Glasgow, it was still necessary for the designers to devise a way to allow vessels to pass. So the bridge was built with three spans. The northern-most span is fixed, supported on the quay wall and a pier in the river.
The
other two are cantilevered around a second pier closer to the southern bank. This allows the sections to be pivoted around the pier.
