16 JANUARY 2001 - Fears Grow Over Missing Woman

The sister of a Glasgow woman missing for more than a week made a passionate plea today for her to get in touch.

Police said fears are growing for the safety of Saima Akhtar (25), (pictured left), missing since Monday of last week.

Saima was last seen leaving her home in Kenmure Street, Pollokshields at 2pm on January 08th. A neighbour saw her leave the entrance to the flat she shares with her sister and turn left into Maxwell Road.

Her sister Robina Akhtar (27) (pictured right), pleaded today for anyone with information to contact the police. She said, "Last time I saw her she talked about going into town to the Argos shop the next day to buy something. I didn't see her on the Monday and assumed that was where she'd gone. There was nothing strange about her - she was just her normal self. I can't imagine where she could be as she only ever went to the shops or library. There's just the two of us living here. We've no family in this country and no real close friends. She didn't take any of her belongings and her passport is still here. She has no money, so I've no idea where she can be. I want to say to her, 'Please call to let me know you're safe. I won't be angry - I just want you to be safe.'
She said Saima hasn't been ill and appeared to be her normal self.
Police are baffled by the disappearance of the Asian woman, who they say never usually left her home after 7pm.
Detectives have all but ruled out the possibility of an arranged marriage having taken place since the sisters have no relatives in the UK. They say there is no evidence of Saima ever having a boyfriend and her sister knows nothing of any plans.
Detective Constable Morag Paul said, "We have spoken to neighbours, housing agencies and various Asian community groups, but no-one has been in contact with her. She has no money, passport or belongings with her and has just disappreared. Given the circumstances we are becoming increasingly concerned for her safety."
Saima has lived with her sister in Pollokshields since they moved in 1995 from Pakistan, where their mother still lives.
Police said Saima was wearing a three-quarter length black leather coat, trousers and dark coloured boots.
Anyone with information should contact Gorbals CID on 0141 532 5300.

It was a sad ending when Saima's body was recovered from the River Clyde.
